Awards, Grants, Scholarships, Fellowships

Grand Challenges Explorations fosters innovation in global health research. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has committed $100 million to encourage scientists worldwide to expand the pipeline of ideas to fight our greatest health challenges. The grant program is open to anyone from any discipline, from student to tenured professor, and from any organization – colleges and universities, government laboratories, research institutions, non-profit organizations and for-profit companies. Initial grants of $100,000 are awarded two times a year. Successful projects have the opportunity to receive a follow-on grant of $1 million or more.
Applications for Round 3 of Grand Challenges Explorations are now being accepted through May 28, 2009.


The Jenzabar Foundation 2009 Student Leadership Awards will recognize seven student groups and their respective leaders for demonstrating a commitment to making a difference through community service and/or humanitarian endeavors either in the United States or globally. Awards will be delivered in the form of a $5000 grant to the institution or non-profit organization listed on the nomination form with the expectation that the funds will be used to continue the work advanced by the student leader(s).
Nominations must be received by April 14, 2009.

The TED Fellows program helps world-changing innovators from around the globe become part of the TED community and, with its help, amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities. It is designed to bring together young world-changers and trailblazers who have shown unusual accomplishment and exceptional courage. The program targets individuals from the Asia/Pacific region, Africa, the Caribbean, Latin America and the Middle East, though anyone from anywhere in the world, age 18 and over, is welcome to apply. They accept approximately 25 Fellows each to TED in Long Beach and TEDGlobal in Oxford, and 100 to TEDIndia in Mysore.

The PopTech Social Innovation Fellows program is designed to equip the next generation of world-changing innovators with the tools, insights, visibility and social network that can help them scale their impacts to new heights. Fellows work in both the for-profit and not-for-profit worlds, have a minimum of 3-5 years experience, and are working in organizations that are well positioned for sustainable growth. Fellows then participate in and present briefly at PopTech, the renowned thought leadership conference, which will take place this year from October 21-24, 2009 in Camden, Maine. Fellos participate in an all-expenses-paid, multi-day intensive program focused on insights and tools for accelerating and scaling “big bet” innovations, such as branding, media relations, social/Web2.0 media, finance, leadership, digital storytelling, design for impact and organizational development.Click here to apply.

Young people today are not protesting or rioting—instead, we are proclaiming ourselves social entrepreneurs and actively searching for the best models to address poverty. This movement is brewing on campuses across the country and the world, including my own, and Acumen Fund wants to help us develop the skills and knowledge we need to pioneer new approaches to poverty alleviation. cumen Fund is hosting its first annual workshop for student leaders on May 28th-30th, 2009 in New York City. Sessions will focus on Acumen Fund and its model, types of enterprises and investors within the social enterprise sector, ideas for skill development and career planning, and opportunities for leadership and engagement in the sector.
